Why the SURGE Program Stands Apart
Every summer, thousands of students apply for internships. Most end up filing papers, making tea, or counting down days until the stipend arrives.
IIT Kanpur’s SURGE (Students-Undergraduate Research Graduate Excellence) program offers something fundamentally different.
Since its inception on May 8, 2006, by Professor Sanjay G. Dhande, SURGE has grown into one of India’s most prestigious research internship platforms . It is not about busy work. It is about genuine research engagement under faculty who are leaders in their fields. It is about spending eight weeks not as an observer, but as a contributor.
For students from institutions outside IIT Kanpur, this is a rare opportunity to step into an Institute of Eminence and work alongside some of the brightest minds in the country.

The SURGE Difference: What Makes It Unique
Research, Not Errands
SURGE is designed for students who want to know what research actually feels like. You are assigned a project, guided by a faculty mentor, and expected to produce meaningful work by the end of eight weeks.
Prestigious Alumni Network
Since 2006, SURGE has hosted thousands of students from across India. Alumni of this program have gone on to top graduate schools, research positions, and leadership roles in academia and industry.
IIT Kanpur’s Research Ecosystem
You get access to IIT Kanpur’s libraries, laboratories, and computational resources. You attend seminars. You interact with PhD scholars. You experience what it means to be part of a research-intensive institution.
No Tuition Fee
Selected candidates do not pay any program fee. Accommodation is provided on campus. Your only investment is your time and intellectual energy.
Eligibility: Who Can Apply?
This category is strictly for Indian students from institutions other than IIT Kanpur. If you are an IITK student, separate provisions exist.

The Application Blueprint: What You Need to Prepare
Unlike mass-recruitment forms where you simply upload a resume, SURGE requires a thoughtfully assembled application package. The selection committee reads every component carefully.
Component 1: Recent Passport-Size Photograph (.jpg format)
Basic requirement. Clear, recent, professional.
Component 2: Single PDF with All Supporting Documents
This PDF is your complete application dossier. It must contain, in order:
A. Transcript(s) / Marksheet(s)
- All semester-wise marksheets up to the last completed semester
- Must clearly show the cumulative CPI/percentage
- Unofficial transcripts are acceptable, but must be legible
B. Research Proposal (Not More Than 500 Words)
This is the most critical part of your application.
What the proposal should include:
- Your area of research interest
- Specific topics you wish to explore
- Why you are interested in this area
- How your background prepares you for this research
- What you hope to achieve during the 8-week program
Available Topics: Applicants are encouraged to browse the official list of available research topics at the SURGE website before writing their proposal . Your proposal should align with ongoing research areas at IITK.
Word Limit: Strictly 500 words. Submissions exceeding this limit may be rejected.
C. Recommendation Letter – I
- From a faculty member of your current institute
- Must be on institute letterhead or the faculty member’s official letterhead
- Must be duly signed
- No fixed format prescribed
D. Recommendation Letter – II
- From another faculty member of your current institute
- Same requirements as Letter I
- Must be from different faculty members
Critical Note on Recommendations:
- The SURGE Office reserves the right to directly contact recommenders for verification
- Address both letters to: Professor In-Charge, Office of Outreach Activities, IIT Kanpur
- Generic or template-sounding letters are easily identified and can weaken your application
E. Course Tenure Document (For 4-Year B.Sc/BA/BCA/BS Students Only)
- Official document from your institute mentioning the duration of your course
- Required only if your marksheets do not clearly indicate the program duration
Selection Process: How Applications Are Evaluated
SURGE selection is not a first-come-first-serve process. Every application is reviewed holistically.
Evaluation Criteria
| Component | Weightage |
|---|---|
| Academic Record (CPI/Percentage) | Moderate |
| Quality of Research Proposal | High |

What the Selection Committee Looks For
- Clarity of thought in the research proposal
- Genuine interest in research, not just resume-building
